Yes it’s true. I’ve been pulled-in by yet another idea inspired by Pinterest.
Last fall when my addiction to pinning started, one of the first things I came across was a vertical garden that recycled a used pallet and turned it into the base for this space-saving planter.
Well seeing that I have a nice little deck off of my place, I figured that this would be a perfect way for me to get some more greenery introduced without taking up a ton of room for seating.
So I went in search of a pallet. Actually, I sent my parents in search of a pallet. I’m a good son.
Luckily, since my mom has been going to the same greenhouse for 25+ years, she was able to have them set aside one for me that only had a few boards missing. Cost. $0.00.
From there, I had to wait all winter … and this past weekend it was time to make it happen.
In case you’re so inclined to make one yourself, here’s what I did. I’m sure there are better ways, but bear with me:
1) I bought some 3-inch square pots and screwed them to the backside of the pallet slightly spacing them out as I went. These cover the entire backsides of the horizontal slats. Other pallet gardens that I’ve seen start by planting everything flat on the ground and then tipping it up once it’s done, but with the back of this pallet missing I had no way to hold soil in so I worked with what I had.
2) I then put some loose soil into the pots and added a mixture of annuals and some periwinkle ground cover that I dug up from my parents’ house. When planted, I simply made sure to push the top of the plant through the slats so that they could grow across the front of the pallet.
3) Now it’s just a waiting game. It looks a little bare now, but hopefully once the summer sun kicks in it’ll fill out and be GORGEOUS. I’ll post another photo later this year (that is, if it grows like I want it to).
